Wednesday, 4/24/13, Cleveland L1, 7pm. Mitchell A. Cahan, M.D., F.A.C.S. Associate Professor of Surgery @UMass Medical School, will screen a film/DVD called Redefining Surgery. This DVD was produced by the American College of Surgeons and is designed to promote surgery as a career to students interested in medicine. Dr. Joel Oppenheim, MD, Sr Associate Dean for Biomedical Sciences & Director of the Sackler Institute for Graduate Biomedical Sciences Graduate Education will present an overview of the Sackler MD/Ph.D. program, NYU’s Summer Undergraduate Research Program and will share information about MD, Ph.D and MD/PhD application strategies. Kelsey McNew ‘13, a participant in NYU’s SURP program last summer, will also talk about her experience.

Abbey Interfaith Sanctuary will be open during the day or evening today, Wednesday and Thursday and also Friday morning for those who might want to pray or reflect on yesterday’s events in Boston. Students or faculty may be practicing the piano or organ in the Main Chapel, however, you are most welcome to enter the Abbey Interfaith Sanctuary during that time. The Positive Body

Ragen Chastain, author, researcher, activist, three-time National Dance Champion and certified fitness professional whose work focuses on self-esteem, body image and health for people of all sizes will present a program on real options for happiness and high self-esteem starting wherever you are right now! The Office of Religious & Spiritual Life & the Jewish Student Union provide Kosher for Passover Meals at Eliot House starting March 25 dinner through April 2 dinner. Reservations are required and are online. Reservation ends 7 pm on March 8 so don’t forget. Eliot House Lounge is also available as a ‘mini-Blanchard’ for those who prefer not to enter Blanchard during this time. Fill out the online registration form.

The Alcohol and Drug Awareness Project and the Alcohol and Drug Awareness Committee are looking for multimedia art submissions to be part of the exhibit “You are Not Alone: Stories of Substance” to be displayed in the Blanchard Art Gallery and the Library Atrium. This exhibit will explore the continuum of use of alcohol and other drugs that many experience: non-use, low risk use, abuse, high risk use, dependency, and recovery. Deadline is Monday February 25th.

Annie Heath Midwifery

Tonight, Thursday, Nov. 15, 7-8pm, Kendade 305.Annie Heath, a certified nurse-midwife who has spent 20 years working with Hispanic communities nationally and internationally will speak about her path through Peace Corps to nursing/midwifery. From 8-9pm Annie will discuss her role with Proyecto ADAMES, an NPO helping women in the Dominican Republic to reduce complications while giving birth.

Professionalism Workshop

Monday, Nov. 12, 7pm, Cleveland L1. David M. Gardner, Ph.D., Dean of Pre-Medical Programs and Pamela B. Matheson, Ph.D., Associate Director of Pre-Health Advising will present a variety of sometimes-overlooked details critical to your success as you prepare for internships, interviews, and admission to health professions schools. Topics: “You’re not wearing that to your interview, are you?!”, “OMG, your Facebook picture was like ROFLMFAO!”, and Overheard in the hospital elevator: “I thought that court record had been sealed.”

A traveling exhibit of photographs by Gigi Kaeser and text edited from interviews conducted by journalist Peggy Gillespie and students at the Four Rivers Charter School. Annie Heath Nurse-Midwife

Wednesday, 10/19/11, 7pm, Cleveland L-1. Annie Heath, Nurse-Midwife will visit MHC to talk about Careers in Women’s Health and International Nursing in the Dominican Republic. Annie is a certified nurse-midwife who has spent almost 20 years working with Hispanic communities nationally and internationally. In 2004 she founded the non-profit Proyecto ADAMES, where she is now director. She was previously a member of the faculty at the School of Nursing at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.

Tornado Relief Efforts

Members of the Mount Holyoke community are working to collect donations (see list of needs below) for drop-off at Mary Mother of Hope Church in Springfield to aid victims of the recent tornado.  Items may be dropped off through July 6 with Deb LaBonte in Financial Services or in a drop-off area organized by Sven Aas and Debra Morrissey in the Library’s atrium.

  • Household items: lamps, dishes, flatware, cups, glassware, small kitchen appliances, pots and pans, linens, blankets, towels
  • Toiletries for adults and children
  • Clothing: spring/summer clothing, all sizes and genders
  • Baby needs: diapers, baby food, formula
  • Non-perishable food supplies

In addition, Cindy LePage’s family is involved in a tornado relief fundraiser. Donations of $10 or more enter the donor in a July 29 drawing for prizes including gas, grocery, retail, and restaurant gift cards. Please contact Cindy for more information, to purchase tickets or help sell them, or to nominate local agencies to receive a portion of the funds raised.

We are all concerned about the effects of the tornado and severe storms that swept Springfield and other local communities yesterday, resulting in loss of life, injury, and significant damage. I hope that all Mount Holyoke employees, their families, and their neighbors came through these storms safely. Many of us are interested in contributing to the relief and clean-up effort. The Red Cross Pioneer Valley Chapter has posted information about opportunities to volunteer and make donations.

Annie Heath Nurse-Midwife

Wednesday, 12/1/10 - Kendade 305 7:00 p.m. Ms. Heath will discuss Careers in Women’s Health and International Nursing in the Dominican Republic. She has spent 20 years working with Hispanic communities nationally and internationally. In 2004 she founded the non-profit Proyecto ADAMES. She graduated from Yale University in 1993, with a masters in nursing and certificate in midwifery.

This year’s “Take the Pledge” campaign is an educational effort to encourage everyone to drive sober during the holiday season. On Monday, Dec 6th all campus departments and student mail boxes will receive pledge cards, which everyone is encouraged to sign and post in Blanchard to visibly show their support. Botanic Garden Plant Sale

Plants remain from the Friends and Family Weekend plant sale. We will sell the plants through this weekend, or until plants are all sold.

President Joanne V. Creighton has announced Hortense Parker Day will become an annual event sponsored by the Office of the Dean of the College. Parker is believed to be Mount Holyoke’s first alumna of color. The first Hortense Parker Day, organized by students Ahyoung An ‘09 and Camila Curtis-Contreras ‘09, was a great success.

MHC Soccer hosts a summer soccer camp on August 24-27, 2009 for girls (grade 4 to HS seniors). It is a 4-day day camp (9am - 4pm). In addition to soccer sessions, there are intercultural activities with Japanese campers. Click for more information or to sign up.

Yesterday, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (MDPH) identified two probable cases of H1N1 (swine) flu at Amherst College. While it is important to note that the cases have not yet been confirmed by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the students involved are receiving appropriate treatment, doing well, and expected to recover fully.

Because it is possible that the illness is present on the Amherst College campus, that school is taking precautions, including asking anyone with symptoms to seek medical evaluation, recommending preemptive care for individuals with compromised immune systems, and canceling a number of social gatherings.

Ongoing surveillance has not identified any cases of H1N1 at Mount Holyoke and, based on guidance from the MDPH and the CDC, all activities on our campus are continuing as scheduled. Assessment of the situation is ongoing; if the advice of public health experts changes or circumstances warrant, the decision will be revisited.

Mount Holyoke College is taking steps to monitor and prepare for the flu pandemic. Updates to the community are being placed on the College’s Web gateways for students, faculty and staff, and parents.

It is important, as reports of swine flu (confirmed or unconfirmed) swell through the media, that the College community respond appropriately, that we maintain perspective, and that we guard against overreaction. To this end, we are taking the steps detailed below.

The following information comes from the Health Center:

College staff continue to monitor the progression of swine flu and participate in ongoing discussion with the Department of Public Health and colleagues within the Five Colleges. The Department of Public Health has a swine flu information line that is open 24/7. Anyone may call 211 for general information. This line is not a source of specific guidance or answers to clinical questions.

At this time there are no suspected or confirmed cases of swine flu on the MHC campus. We have not seen an increase in the number of students seeking care for flu-like illness. We strongly encourage each of you to use personal precautions to reduce the potential for infection. These are the same precautions that are recommended annually during flu season:

–Cough or sneeze into your sleeve, or cover your mouth with a tissue. Dispose immediately of used tissues and wash your hands.

–Frequent hand washing with soap and water when possible or use of hand sanitizers. Hand washing should last through one singing of “Happy Birthday.”

–Maintain good nutrition, sleep and hydration.

–Avoid crowds if possible and maintain a distance of 3-6 feet from anyone who appears to have a flu-like illness.

–Seek medical care if you are experiencing a flu-like illness with the following symptoms:

Fever (100 or higher)
Cough
Runny nose
Sore throat

To reduce the potential for exposure and to try to limit the spread of the flu, the following steps are being implemented by staff of Public Safety and the Health Center.

STUDENTS: All Mount Holyoke College students with the above symptoms should CALL the Health Center BEFORE coming to urgent care. Call 413-538-2242. After the Health Center’s usual hours of operation press zero to reach the on-call clinician.

FACULTY AND STAFF: Employees with these symptoms should not report to work and should contact their primary health care providers.

Students contacting Public Safety for a ride to the Health Center will first be asked specifically about symptoms that suggest a flu-like illness. Students with these illnesses will be transferred to the Health Center.

Public Safety will continue to transport students to the Health Center, but any student with these symptoms must be evaluated by phone by a Health Center nurse PRIOR to the transport and will be asked to wear a surgical mask during the transport.

All students with flu symptoms will be directed to the urgent care area for evaluation and care.

At this time the College calendar remains unchanged, and the community will be notified of any changes or cancellations required by the Department of Public Health.

Campus public health, safety, and medical professionals are closely monitoring an outbreak of swine flu in the United States and abroad.

Swine flu is a respiratory disease of pigs. People aren’t normally affected, but human infection can occur. The virus spreads from person to person; you cannot get swine flu from eating pork or pork products. No cases have currently been identified in Massachusetts.

Mount Holyoke College Health Services participates in the U.S. public health surveillance network, sending reports on emerging issues and trends to local, state, and national health agencies. The swine flu outbreak has been declared a public health emergency by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), triggering heightened surveillance across the nation.

Officials are reminding the campus community about important steps to help prevent getting or spreading any type of flu:

- Wash your hands often with soap and water or with an alcohol-based hand sanitizer;

- Cough or sneeze into a tissue or into your elbow instead of into your hands; and

- If you have flu-like symptoms, stay away from work, classes, and social activities.

Flu symptoms include fever of 101 degrees, cough, sore throat, and fatigue. If symptoms persist for 24 hours, contact your health care provider. MHC students should call the health center and speak with the triage nurse (413-538-2242).

The CDC and other public health officials are working to determine the scope and source of the outbreak. This is a rapidly evolving situation. For the latest information, visit the CDC website or the State of Massachusetts .

Additional resources for members of the Mount Holyoke community who are currently abroad or planning to travel abroad are the World Health Organization and the US Embassy website (or your home country’s embassy) for your location. Students who are studying abroad should check with their program or host university about the situation in their area. We recommend that US citizens register with the local embassy, if they have not already done so, so that they may be contacted in the event of an emergency (US citizens can register on-line at https://travelregistration.state.gov/ibrs/ui/; citizens of other countries should check with their home country’s embassy to see if a similar service is available).

Federal regulation and College policy require that all graduating students who ever borrowed a Federal Direct Student Loan (FDSL), Perkins loan, Massachusetts No Interest Loan and/ or Mount Holyoke College Loan MUST complete Exit Counseling before leaving in May.

This is a reminder to all students that your student account balance must be paid in full if you would like to participate in the housing lottery. Please contact Student Financial Services if you have questions.

Encourage your daughter to come to this financial literacy workshop where she will learn about default prevention, choosing a loan, use of credit, establishing good credit, successful budget planning and avoiding identity theft. If she starts now she will be equipped with the tools to make her post-MHC dreams a reality. Two workshops will be offered in April. Spring Flower Show

Looking for a breath of spring? The MHC Botanic Garden Spring Flower Show is open now through March 22. The title is “A Walk in the Park.” Hours for the show are 10-4 daily.

“Intersections” will be performed on Sunday, February 1 at 7 pm in Chapin Auditorium. This moving performance of personal stories from MHC students about race, gender, class, sexual orientation, nationality, ability and other aspects of their identity debuted to rave reviews by new students and leaders during Fall Orientation. MEFA announced on September 16th that after successfully raising $400 million in financing through the sale of bonds, it will immediately begin offering fixed interest rate MEFA Loans to families for academic year 2008-2009. Tonight (2/26) at 7:30pm Kimmie Weeks, acclaimed human rights activist, founder of Youth Action International, and survivor of the Liberian civil war, will be presenting the MTV series 4real Liberia. Due to the current snowstorm, Facilities Management has asked that a parking ban be placed into effect to help accommodate snow plowing. The ban will begin this evening, Friday, February 22 at 11:00 p.m. and end tomorrow, Saturday, February 23 at 9:00 a.m.

This parking ban is for any roadway spaces. Any faculty/staff who need to be on campus during this time please park in a faculty/staff lot.

Public Safety will make every effort to assist Handicap/Medical permit holders in getting back to their residence halls after moving their vehicles upon request to Public Safety at x2304. However, officers will not be able to call permit holders personally.

Students or community members with guests or events tonight during this ban should direct visitors to park in faculty/staff parking lots rather than along roadways so as not to impede snow removal operations.

Through November 26, Archives & Special Collections is exhibiting letters, memorabilia and photographs from the Mary McHenry Papers that document her experiences as an African-American alumna (Class of 1954) and Mount Holyoke English professor (1974-1998). Is your daughter’s birthday coming up? The sophomore class runs a fundraiser each year by selling cakes and cookies to relatives and friends of Mount Holyoke students for their birthdays. The options include both traditional cakes as well as large (14-inch) cookies. The cookies, available in chocolate chip and oatmeal raisin, have an iced message on top. Either item can be delivered to the bell desk in the student’s hall on the requested day. Cakes and cookies are delivered only during the academic year. Members of the Mount Holyoke Baroque Ensemble will present a program of virtuoso instrumental music of the early seventeenth century featuring works by Marini, Frescobaldi, Fontana on Friday, October 26, at 8 pm in McCulloch Auditorium. Celebrated Iranian women’s rights activist, attorney, and author Mehrangiz Kar will launch the Weissman Center’s “Bearing Witness” series this Thursday, October 18, at 7:30 pm in Gamble Auditorium. Ms. Kar will lecture on women’s rights issues in Iran today and discuss her latest published work, “Crossing the Red Line: The Struggle for Human Rights in Iran.” Book signing follows. Auxiliary Services - Mail has installed a new receiving system for processing student parcels. Students will now receive an email as soon as package arrives instead of waiting for a notice to be placed in their mailbox. Students can also check online to see if they have a package at /go/mail.
